| July 19, 2010 NANAIMO – B.C. students competing in technical trades finished the Olympic school year on top of the podium at the 2010 Skills Canada competition. “Vancouver Island University has excellent trades programs that set students up for success once they graduate,” says Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. “Once these highly skilled students complete their training, their contributions to the workforce will keep our economy thriving. These awards are a great way to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of these students.” Vancouver Island University student and Nanaimo resident Kristina Dyrblom won Gold at the provincial level in the field of baking. After winning regional and provincial Skills Canada competitions, 45 students advanced to the national competition, which was held from May 20 to 23 in Waterloo, Ontario. B.C. students won seven gold, eight silver and three bronze medals at the national competition in technical fields that will be key to the future of B.C.’s economy, such as TV and video production, internet web design and aircraft maintenance.
