NEW FENCE ENSURES SAFER HIGHWAY IN NANOOSE BAY

NANOOSE BAY- A new fence has been installed along Highway 19 to deter pedestrians from unsafely crossing the highway.

“In light of the tragic accidents that have recently occurred along this stretch of highway, I think it’s only appropriate that we adhere to the request of the Nanoose First Nations and implement measures to keep pedestrians safe,” says Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon.

This year there have been two fatalities as a result of a pedestrian and vehicle collision on Highway 19, adjacent to the Nanoose First Nations lands. Both incidents are still under RCMP investigation.

“We have now accomplished our short term goal to keep the highway safe for pedestrians,” says Nanoose First Nations Band Manager Brent Edwards. “We look forward to working with the province to move forward, implement our long term goals and to ensure residents’ safety.”

The Screen-Safe fence acts as both a barrier and a Highway Glare Screen Safety Shield. It was installed on top of the existing concrete median barrier between the westbound and southbound lanes on Highway 19, between Lantzville Road and Ruming Road. Screen-Safe is made from a unique double-reversed corrugated fabric, formed from hot-dipped galvanized sheet steel.
