Province Supports Local Marine Safety

NANAIMO- The Nanaimo Marine Rescue Society will receive $100,000 in Community Gaming Grants to support public safety and ensure wellbeing off the shores of Nanaimo and area.

“We are safer on the water thanks to the many volunteers who respond no matter what the weather,” says Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. “It’s always important to be prepared and aware when venturing out into the ocean, but it’s reassuring that if something unexpected happens the Rescue Society will be there to help.”

The Nanaimo Marine Rescue Society (NMRS) is the 27th Unit of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA), responding to calls off the shores of Nanaimo and area, with neighbouring units in Nanoose and Ladysmith. The NMRS is one of the busiest units in the region. The CCGA is a nationwide organization of volunteers formed by the Canadian Coast Guard in 1978. The Auxiliary brought structure to the number of marine volunteer organizations performing these functions themselves.
