| September 10, 2009 More than $1.3 Million Invested in Local Municipalities NANAIMO – The provincial government is providing more than $1.3 million to central Vancouver Island communities to support public safety initiatives and local government operations. “It is imperative that we continue to support public safety at the local level,” says Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. “Every community’s safety and policing needs are unique and localized funding helps to address these needs.” Local Strategic Community Investment funding includes: • Nanaimo receives $632,313 in Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing. • Lantzville receives $206,487 in Small Community Grants. • Parksville receives $156,728 in Small Community Grants and $56,168 in Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing. • Qualicum Beach receives $188,199 in Small Community Grants and $27,378 in Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing. • Regional District of Nanaimo receives $60,680 in Regional District Grants. “Small Community Grants are highly valuable in these challenging economic times. They will help alleviate costs to municipalities and contribute their operations,” says Cantelon. This is the second installment of the Strategic Community Investment Fund, a two-year, $232-million initiative consisting of the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program and Small Community and Regional District Grants. Communities received a first payment in Spring 2009 and will receive a third payment in early 2010. Through the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program, the province has provided 100 per cent of net traffic fine revenues to local government since 2004. Traffic fine revenue comes from fines on violation tickets, with a municipality receiving an amount based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs. The Small Community and Regional District Grant allocation is calculated based on population and assessment. -30- | |
